The Lazio Region network

The Lazio Region with DGR n. 408 of 26 November 2013, adheres to the international project The City of children and establishes the specific Regional Project called "Lazio, the Region of children", making use of the scientific collaboration of the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies of the CNR for its realization.

Through the project "Lazio, the Region of children", the Region proposes to the cities of its territory a new philosophy of city government, taking the child as a paradigm of the actions necessary to change it, and through which to implement autonomy projects of movement and participation implemented by mayors and administrators to make the city more livable, sustainable and better for all citizens.

Currently, 18 cities and 2 Roman municipalities are part of the regional network:

Albano Laziale (RM), Bassiano (LT), Cantalice (TI), Capena (RM), Casperia (RI), Castel Madama (RM), Castel Sant’ Elia (VT), Cori (LT), Latina, Lenola (LT), Maenza (LT), Monte San Biagio (LT), Oriolo Romano (VT), Priverno (LT), Rieti, Segni (LT), Zagarolo (RM), V Municipio di Roma Capitale, XI Municipio di Roma Capitale.

The regional network was established through the implementation of awareness-raising and training activities aimed at administrators and representatives of the municipalities belonging to the network.

Among the training activities, two study and training trips were carried out in particularly significant cities: in 2018 in Malnate, in the province of Varese and last February in Fano, the birthplace of the project

Furthermore, two international and one regional conferences were held; the first international conference on the topic of autonomous mobility "Autonomy is health" in 2015 and the second on child participation "The CHILDREN'S COUNCIL - Why should girls and boys participate in the governance of cities?" in 2017. The regional conference "Why we need children to save cities" included the presentation of the experiences carried out by the Municipalities of the Network". In 2021, the meeting on the Right to Gamble was held: "Sorry to bother you, we are playing for you"!

The research activity instead included:

  • a survey on the independent mobility of children, carried out in the municipalities of Casperia, Formia, Genazzano, Subiaco and Vasanello;
  • the evaluation activity of the project "Lazio, the Region of girls and boys".

As part of the collaboration agreement, the "Participatory planning manual with boys and girls" was created and published, dedicated to the Participatory Planning proposal, published in 2018 by the ZeroSeiUp publishing house. The manuals on the Children's Council and We Go to School Alone were also printed.

The creation of the regional network also allowed the stipulation of a partnership agreement with the Municipality of Rieti (leader), the Province of Rieti, the Lazio Region - Regional Directorate for Natural Capital, Parks and Protected Areas, the Municipalities of Subiaco, Vasanello and Casperia for the implementation of the project "We go to school alone", within the "National experimental program of sustainable home-school and home-work mobility" of the Ministry of the Environment and Protection of Land and Sea (MATTM).
